John Nicholson, Co-Founder

John has had an interesting and varied career path. Graduating from a degree in Education in 1987 and then training in mental health, John worked in a psychiatric crisis unit for the NHS. He then worked in children’s homes before training to become an actor.

With Peepolykus - the theatre company he founded in 1994 - he has had hit shows at the Edinburgh Festival and toured all over the world, often under the auspices of the British Council.

He began directing and writing plays in 2007 which led to West End productions for Nina Conti, Paul Merton. Other directing/writing collaborations include Rik Mayall, Mike Mcshane, Aardman, Royal National Theatre and National Youth Theatre.

John has worked and performed at many of the UK’s major producing house theatres and his West End adaptation of The Hound of The Baskervilles is regularly licensed worldwide.

His writing output includes three series and two afternoon plays for BBC Radio 4.

He began running workshops and courses in improvisation in 2002 and has been invited to run courses and masterclasses all over the world. He recently accepted an invitation from King’s College, London to collaborate on a research project, assessing the value of improvisation training for teachers mainstream education.

John lives in Bristol with his 14 year old daughter and loves playing jazz trumpet and making things out of reclaimed wood.
